Gas measurements & research
There are several ways how noxious gases end up in shipping containers. First of all, sometimes the goods inside containers need to be fumigated for pest control. Gases such as methylbromide, phosphine and sulfurylfluoride are used to fumigate these goods. Furthermore, gases can evaporate out of goods or packaging materials. During shipping leakage of the goods can occur and this may also cause the presence of noxious gases.
Besides our drive-in location at the Maasvlakte, we can perform real-time gas measurements at your location all over the Netherlands or on inland terminals. By request, we are also able to perform gas measurements in Belgium and Germany.
A combination of different detection techniques combined with specialized and experienced staff provide an accurate gas measurement.
Is your container selected for a physical check performed by Customs? They will inspect whether the cargo corresponds with declaration form of the container.
Before opening, the container needs to be measured by a certified specialist (MGK). The physical check will proceed when no dangerous or noxious gases above the limit values are measured. Read more
Threshold limit values (TLV)
The threshold limit values of the gases in the Netherlands are published on the website of the “Sociaal Economische Raad (SER)”.
Too high gas concentrations inside your container?
What to do when your container is rejected because of too high gas concentrations? Some toxic gases in containers evaporate out of the cargo or packaging materials during hardening of the used materials. Some substances are used to conserve goods or are used for pest control (such as methyl bromide, phosphine and sulfuryl fluoride). These substances can therefore be present in high concentrations inside the container. Opening and entering rejected containers (which have not been degassed) may cause serious health risks. More than just gas measurements
Besides regular gas measurements in shpping containers we are able to perform research in warehouses, dangerous goods bunkers (ADR), tanks and ship’s holds. Furthermore, our equipment is very suited for screening gas concentrations during working and production processes. These investigations are performed in cooperation with the customer. Results, advice and coaching will be presented in an extended report. For more information about these investigations please click here.
