What to do when your container is rejected because of too high gas concentrations? Some toxic gases in containers evaporate out of the cargo or packaging materials during hardening of the used materials. Some substances are used to conserve goods or are used for pest control (such as methyl bromide, phosphine and sulfuryl fluoride). These substances can also cause elevated gas concentrations inside the container. Opening and entering rejected containers (which have not been degassed) may cause serious health risks.
To provide gas free containers we apply several methods. The used method and duration of degassing depends on the following variables:
– Weather conditions
– Type of gas
– Concentration of gas
– Volume of the products

At our terminals we have all the facilities required to degas containers that contain too much gas. We make use of powerful ventilators which force gases out of the container (by negative pressure). To save the environment all toxic gases are filtered, which leaves clean air. This system is among other things developed in order not to open containers which require Customs inspection.
Gasmeetstation Netherlands owns an area for forced ventilation with a capacity of 40 containers (reefers included). These containers can all degassed simultaneously. The main advantage of forced ventilation is that it is applicable under all circumstances.
Natural ventilation is applied by opening the container doors. (We always use protective gear when opening container doors if containers need to be ventilated.) This type of ventilation is limited to natural gases such as; oxygen, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Furthermore, it is limited by the weather conditions because the container doors have to be opened and by the quantity of goods inside the container.
Removal of phosphine
Phosphine is added for pest control. When phosphine is measured, there is a big chance of finding residuals (tablets, powder or bags). These residuals react with water (in the air) in order to produce phosphine. It is essential that these residuals are safely removed, because of their capacity to produce phosphine over a longer period. We offer the removal of phosphine residuals with protective gear and respiratory protection. After removal the residuals are separately discharged and destroyed.
Unloading with protective gear
When products inside a container keep on evaporating noxious gases, or the customer needs the products ASAP, we offer to unload the container with protective gear. Different types of protective gear can be used depending on the measured substances. We even offer the possibility to repack the products or remove stowage materials when these are the root cause (of too high gas readings).
